Courage, confidence and charisma – the 3C’s that can change the way others respond to you.

There are many traits you can develop to improve your life and help you achieve your goals but few will have an impact as powerful as courage, confidence and charisma.

So, exactly what are the traits of courage, confidence and charisma?

Courage is the ability to take action despite feelings of doubt, fear, or uncertainty. It determines the level of risk you are willing to take and is usually the precursor to building confidence.

Confidence is a feeling of trust in something or someone. Self-confidence is trusting that you can meet and even exceed the challenges in your life.

Charisma is having a strong sense of self-worth and faith in your abilities, knowledge, and contribution. It positively impacts how credible you are perceived by others.

It is an understatement to say that these three attributes are useful traits to have in your personality toolbox. They can help you create opportunities, open doors, and achieve what others only dream of.

Some people seem to naturally possess these characteristics and luckily for the rest of us, these traits can be learned, cultivated, and mastered.

1. Understand your ‘why’

Your why gives purpose and meaning to what you do. If you focus on the reason why, it can provide a strong motive for the actions that fuel courage. Knowing your – why, keeps you focused and driven during challenging times – it gives you the courage to keep going despite the odds.

2. Be objective

Be objective when identifying the reasons for your doubts and fears. By taking the emotion out of the situation you can see it for what it truly is, and usually, it’s not as bad as you think. Do you really mess up ALL the time? Did your mistake on your latest project mean ALL is lost or is it a setback that can be overcome with a different approach?

3. Feel the fear and do it anyway

In fact,  – e.g. if you lack the courage to voice your opinion in meetings, get your word in soon after the meeting starts. As the meeting progresses, everyone becomes more involved and it becomes harder to interject and stand out. Also, you don’t run the risk of someone else raising the same point and getting the credit for something you could have contributed. Additionally, it can help you feel less nervous because the positive feedback you may receive can give you the confidence to raise more points in the meeting.


1. Keep score of your successes

Keep track of even the small wins and occasionally reward yourself for your success. It doesn’t have to be expensive but do something in acknowledgement of your triumph. Celebrate your wins… both big and small.

2. Set yourself up to win

Achieve this by doing things you are good at and preparing properly when attempting unfamiliar tasks.  to master something new. Treat yourself with the same level of patience and understanding as you would a friend.

3. Avoid belittling yourself

Avoid it in thoughts, words, and actions. It can have a damaging effect on your identity in the long term. We are all guilty of this at times but this behaviour will undermine your efforts and make it difficult to keep motivated when disappointments arise.

1. Work on having great presence
This includes all the elements that make up your personal brand e.g. your personal attire, etiquette, communication, presentation skills, etc. The list goes on and on… Your most important selling point is you. Your personal brand is your billboard of who you are and what you can offer.

2. Make others feel important

Give credit where credit is due and give your full attention when engaging with others. In our busy world, these qualities are constantly being challenged by technology and other distractions. We all love to be heard and feel understood. Ask questions, confirm what was said, use nonverbal cues that you are listening – such as a nod or head tilt. Give the other person your full attention when engaging. Actually, it’s rude not to do so.

3. Be relatable

People feel more comfortable when they have something in common with you. Identify something you may have in common. Perhaps you read the same book, attended the same university, played the same sport, or travelled to the same foreign country. Use this connection to build trust and rapport.
